What is the Eruv Zurich?

The eruv is a symbolic pathway connecting several Zurich neighborhoods into a single, shared space. Existing walls, fences, and building walls are used, and the remaining gaps are closed with thin, barely visible wires – so-called Tzuras HaPesach ("doorframes"). Once this pathway is complete, people of Jewish faith can carry goods in this area on Shabbat. This allows, among other things, the carrying of items such as strollers, prayer books, meals, and much more.

A team inspects the eruv every week before Shabbat, and only when the complete eruv is intact is it declared "valid." You can view the current status live here on Eruv.ch.

FAQ

Where exactly does the Zurich eruv run?
The Eruv mainly encloses the districts of Wiedikon, Enge, and Wollishofen. A Google map with the exact course can be found here.
The status will be displayed on this page every Friday after inspection. Carrying is only permitted if it says “valid” (green). You can get updates here.

A team under rabbinic supervision inspects the entire route weekly and repairs any damage before Shabbat.

The Eruv Zurich is under the joint responsibility of the rabbis of Agudas Achim, the Israelitische Cultusgemeinde Zürich (ICZ), and the Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft (IRG).

Strollers, wheelchairs, and walking aids may be used within the Eruv area without concern.

Contact your community rabbi or the Eruv committee. When in doubt, the personal rabbinic ruling always applies.

For further information, please contact your rabbi or send us your question.
